On Zero Day there can only be one winner.

"I want my money" he screamed.
He pointed the gun at Jackie Aziz.
"You. I recognise you. Why did you say that? Why did you say that about the bank?"
She knelt. Frozen, too scared to move or speak. He snapped open the barrel.
“You really are going to tell me,” he whispered, and slipped another blood-red round into the gun.

Danny Bowen is the reluctant hacktivist who founded Nameless, the collective with attitude and ability whose exposure of global surveillance shook the world. But bringing down governments wasn’t part of Danny’s plan, and he got out before things went too far. Most of the collective found themselves in jail, only the brilliant Cassandra managed to outwit the security services.

Danny might have retained his freedom but he’s lost everything else. His best friends, his job, and part of himself. Now he’s a lonely ex-black hat with a mark against his name, scraping a living in information security.

But someone wants his attention. Hired to investigate an attack on Hamilton Private Equity he instead uncovers a plot on an unimaginable scale. It’s no coincidence somebody wants him to take the job. Danny knows that on Zero Day ordinary people will bear the brunt of this next attack. It’s his last chance to atone for his failures, and to prove he’s still the best.

Hooked into a deadly race with a group of ultra-violent Russian Mafia and a sociopathic search-engine billionaire Danny must find the key before it’s too late. He has nothing to lose. They have everything to gain. Literally, everything.

Black Sands, Carl Goodman’s debut novel, is a taut, fast-paced, action-packed techno-thriller that twists and turns to the very end and leaves you wondering if there’s anyone you can trust.

Praise for Black Sands
“The book’s premise sets it miles apart from your average action thriller… There’s no blueprint for the world Goodman has created, which makes riding along with Lauren and Danny such a joy. This is one page-turner that will forever change the way you look at our connected world.” BestThrillers.com

I really didn't want this book to end, it was such a rush!

Danny Bowen, hacker extraordinaire & former leader of the hacking collecting Nameless is now a security consultant. He gets the job of his lifetime (which seems mundane even to him at first) when approached by a private equity firm that's just lost £30 million form a hack into their system. When his entire system gets breached in a rather humiliating way and he's sent on a chase Fro ransomware, things get real for him.

Roegen, the beautiful algorithm created by its genius maker that intersects w/ Danny’s life in a very interesting way sits at the center stage of this story. It raises many ethical questions on AI & humans that readers will the time to think hard about long after the book is done.

Michael Learner’s the poster boy for the never satisfied fund manager. He crashes the economic system of a super power not just for the beef it if it but for thrills. Exactly what those who fear digital currency’s headed for an inevitable exploit dream of never encountering.

I loved the tech speak throughout the book as a closet geek and I think for anybody interested in the financial markets, AI and the intersection between commerce and AI will find this book interesting. It was a very good attempt at using great fiction to raise the many questions surrounding AI and humanity, as the singularity approaches. Definitely worth the read.

Black Sands edition by Carl Goodman Mystery Thriller Suspense eBooks Reviews

Carl Goodman writes a good story. Black Sands is a techno-thriller that delivers technological terror. A glossary with the technical words would make it easier for those who are not as computer savvy to understand certain twists in the story. I also would have enjoyed more emotional insight into the characters, especially the main ones. However, the story line is compelling and kept me continuing with the book, even when I ran into numerous grammatical errors and extra or missing words; the editing could have been much better. All said, Black Sands is worth the time to read. It's fast-paced and opens the door to understanding the cyber-crime potential on our planet.
Russian techno-thugs, an evil billionaire businessman, a technology expert who is trying to restore his reputation and a fast-paced techno-thriller about an attempt to use technology to destroy a major financial system! If you aren't frightened about the technology threats we are facing today and will in the future by reading the daily headlines, this books should make you shake in your shoes.

While the story revolves around technology, the story is understandable to the non-techy types like me. The characters are interesting. The characters are well-drawn. You'll find yourself pulling for certain characters and hating others and for each caring about the outcome. The story charges forward at an unrelenting pace. I couldn't wait to get to the end to see how everything would turn out.
Danny Bowen was an activist hacker who founded a group called Nameless, designed to expose the global surveillance network. When the group started looking at bringing down governments, Bowen said no, and jumped ship—just in time, as a crackdown led to the other members of Nameless going to prison. The others, that is, except the brilliant hacker Cassandra who managed to outwit the authorities.
When Bowen, who is trying to change his black hat hacker status to something more respectable, is hired to investigate a hacking attack on a private equity company, he uncovers a plot even more deadly. He soon finds himself in a race for his life against the Russian Mafia and a sociopathic billionaire, and having to reconnect with Cassandra just to stay alive.
Black Sands by Carl Goodman is a compelling mystery with all the usual elements; good vs. evil, a flawed hero, and a deadline for the hero to solve the situation or else. Goodman starts off with high tension, and manages to ratchet it higher until it reaches an . . . no, I won’t tell you. Read it for yourself and find out.
First off, this is a compelling read with interesting characters, intense action and a truly frightening premise that really could be happening right now. I could hardly put the book down and highly recommend it.

On the other hand, it would benefit from a decent editor, as the author has several odd takes on the English language that need smoothing out. For example, to say that someone is "pouring over a document" does not mean what the author clearly thinks it means, as evidenced by its repeated use throughout the book. The correct usage is "poring over a document". "Pour over" is how you can make coffee.

The author is similarly unsure of "breaking" when used to slow down a vehicle, or "braking" as I like to call it. I think you get the idea here. I just hate to see basically excellent writing contain these jarring errors.

Finally, there was a major plot hole (SPOILER ALERT)

Much of the book is spent with the main villain of the piece sending his minions in search of the "McGuffin", which in this case is the other half of a pair of USB "keys" controlling the use of a terrible cyber warfare weapon. It's one of the driving forces in the book.
During the climactic scene, where they are finally united and put to use, the protagonist destroys one of the keys, rendering the other useless and supposedly taking the weapon out of play. This is shortly followed by the villain taking flight - with another pair of the keys. What? Where did this second pair of keys come from? If he had them, why did he spend 80% of the book trying to get the second one?
This letdown deflated what would otherwise be a very good experience with the book. I hope that the author might take the opportunity to clean up the editing a bit and find some other way to end the book without playing his audience for fools.
